Among the many notable charity sales at the 2018 Scottsdale Auction, it was this 2017 Ford GT that pushed Barrett-Jackson over the $100 million mark in funds raised for worthy causes since 1971.
To mark Barrett-Jackson’s half-century in business, in this special series we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite moments from the past 50 years – as well as some little-known facts about The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.
Carolyn and Craig Jackson’s 1988 35th Anniversary Corvette sold for $350,000 to benefit the American Heart Association as part of the company’s yearlong “Driven Hearts” campaign.
The 2018 Scottsdale Auction was a particularly special one for Barrett-Jackson – in more ways than one.
For the first time in the company’s history, the Barrett-Jackson team was joined on the block by a former U.S. president, George W. Bush. He, along with television host Jay Leno, as well as Chad McQueen, son of TV actor Steve McQueen, lent their efforts to help raise awareness and donations for charity during the event.
The 2018 Scottsdale event also marked the launch of the company’s first-ever yearlong charitable initiative for the American Heart Association, called “Driven Hearts.” Spearheaded by Barrett-Jackson Vice President of Brand Strategy Carolyn Jackson, the campaign successfully reached millions and raised millions for the important cause. With Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, onstage, the initiative was kicked off in Scottsdale by the $350,000 sale of Carolyn and Craig Jackson’s 1988 35th Anniversary Corvette.
President George W. Bush gets ready to drop the gavel on the $1.4 million sale of a 2018 Corvette Carbon 65 Edition.
President Bush and Leno were on hand for the sale of a 2018 Corvette Carbon 65 Edition, which sold for $1.4 million to benefit The George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Military Service Initiative, while McQueen was on stage as the VIN 001 Ford Mustang Bullitt brought in $300,000 for Boys Republic.
In all, 10 vehicles made their way across the block to be auctioned for worthy causes at the Scottsdale event – but it was the first current-generation Ford GT donated for charity since the car was introduced that brought in $2.55 million and pushed Barrett-Jackson over the $100 million mark in funds raised for worthy causes since 1971.
Steve McQueen’s son Chad was on the block for the $300,000 sale of the VIN 001 Mustang Bullitt.
“This has been an incredible decades-long journey for our company, driven by our tremendous bidders, consignors, sponsors, celebrities and the entire collector car community, whose hearts are only matched by their generosity and outpouring of support,” said Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson during the event.
Over the years, a myriad of celebrities and captains of industry – including Edsel Ford II, Roger Penske, Mary T. Barra, Gary Sinise, Steven Tyler, Marcus Luttrell, Greg Olsen and many more – have donated their time, vehicles and star power to help Barrett-Jackson hit this momentous charity milestone and go even further. To date, more than $134 million has been raised to help those in need.
