BARRETT-JACKSON’S END-OF-NIGHT SONG: A 50 Facts & Favorite Memories Feature
As the end-of-night music comes to a close, Craig and Carolyn Jackson reflect on the end of another successful auction at night’s end.

To mark Barrett-Jackson’s half-century in business, in this special series we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite moments from the past 50 years – as well as some little-known facts about The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.

Sometimes traditions have been around so long that nobody quite remembers how they came to be in the first place.

As the music plays at the end of the night, some lucky fans look to snap a photo with Craig Jackson as he comes off the block.

Barrett-Jackson has a number of traditions, but if you are among those in the auction arena when the last car of the day crosses the block, you’ll know that one of them is the playing of Roger Miller’s 1964 hit song “Chug-a-Lug” – which reached No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 that year:

Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug
Make you want to holler hi-de-ho
Burns your tummy, don’tcha know
Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug

It may not be a Grammy-award-winning number, but it’s catchy nonetheless.

According to Barrett-Jackson Site and Operations Director Casey McDonald, who is approaching his 30th year with the company, the song’s been a tradition at the end of every auction day for at least three decades. “One of the audio guys came up with it,” he remembers. You might say it’s Barrett-Jackson’s version of “last call,” giving everyone a chance to clear the stage, finish their drinks and gather their belongings before the arena closes for the night to set up for the next day.

To follow “Chug-a-Lug,” the Barrett-Jackson team has compiled a couple of automotive-related playlists they rely on to keep the ambiance buzzing while people take their final photos of the night.

To help finish up the excitement of an auction, at the end of the last night of every event, you’ll usually hear Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again” – although Jackson Browne’s “The Load-Out” has also been used from time to time. The “On The Road Again” lyrics fittingly pay tribute to all those who have traveled from near and far to experience The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions – as well as to those who will work through the night to tear down the auction block and arena and get things loaded into semitrucks that will move on to the next Barrett-Jackson event.

So if you’re around at the end of an auction day, head to the arena and sing along!
