Justin Bieber addressing the crowd in the auction arena during the sale of is 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia.
To mark Barrett-Jackson’s half-century in business, in this special series we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite moments from the past 50 years – as well as some little-known facts about The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.
Discovery Channel’s Chris Jacobs interviews Justin Bieber, West Coast Customs CEO Ryan Friedlinghaus and Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson in the staging lanes.
It was one of the standout moments of the 2017 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, a moment where The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions became the center of the entertainment universe. The auction site had been buzzing all week with rumors that Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Justin Bieber would make an appearance during the sale of his West Coast Customs-built 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia. The rumors were true.
The excitement on the grounds and in the packed auction arena was palpable. The arrival of the international pop sensation was met with a swarm onlookers, fans and media, all keen to catch a glimpse of or snag a photo of the music megastar. “Barrett-Jackson auctions are far more than a gathering of car collectors,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Over the years, celebrities, business leaders and sports icons alike have flocked to our events. No other collector car auction delivers the kind of high-octane excitement, where celebrity sightings are as common as the rare collector cars that cross our block.”
Bieber ran into his friend Bubba Watson at the auction and enjoyed some ice cream with the two-time Masters champ’s son.
Built by West Coast Customs, the custom Ferrari is wrapped in Frozen Blue and fitted with a widebody kit by famed Japanese tuner Liberty Walk. “We loved working with Justin to make his Ferrari a true one-of-one custom supercar,” said Ryan Friedlinghaus, CEO of West Coast Customs. “He was heavily involved in the customization process and really put his signature style on this Ferrari. I can’t think of a better place than Barrett-Jackson to give someone else the chance to love it as much as he did.”
In the staging lanes, Bieber, joined by Friedlinghaus, said a final farewell to his beloved and first Ferrari before joining it on the block. Met with thunderous applause and cheering fans, bidding took off, quickly passing the six-figure mark with Bieber promising the winning bidder a set of exclusive concert tickets and backstage passes. When the hammer fell, a new auction record had been set as the Frozen Blue 458 sold for a final price of $434,500.
“Justin clearly had a good time at the event,” said Jackson. “He even ran into his friend, two-time Masters champ Bubba Watson, on-site and enjoyed an ice cream break with Bubba and his son! He is welcome back any time.”
You never know what megastars and supercars you’ll encounter at Barrett-Jackson. But, as they say, seeing is believing – and at the 2017 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, megastar Justin Bieber turned the capacity crowd into “Beliebers.”
