FIRST DAY THURSDAY: Opening Night Party excitement carries into some record-setting sales at the Inaugural Houston Auction

Great traditions in a new venue: The giant American flag and auctioneer lineup on the first day of Barrett-Jackson’s Inaugural Houston Auction.

A great kickoff for the Houston Auction: Barrett-Jackson’s famed Opening Night Party.

It’s all happening in Houston! Barrett-Jackson kicked off its first auction in the Lone Star State with a festive Opening Night Party Wednesday night at the NRG Center, where bidders, consignors and guests enjoyed a variety of fine culinary fare and live music. The acclaimed Emerald City band from Dallas had the entire crowd on its feet, singing along and dancing the night away to an incredible state-of-the art performance.

The energetic evening set the tone for the first day of the auction itself on Thursday, where more than 100 pieces of authentic automobilia had their turn in the spotlight in the morning. Top sellers included a Shell Oil gas pump from the late 1950s/early 1960s, as well as a number of brilliantly colored signs, such as Chevrolet OK Used Cars illuminated sign, a Pennzoil Motor Oil porcelain sign from the late 1950s, and a vintage light-up sign featuring the iconic Chevrolet bowtie.

Then it was time for the collector cars to start rolling across the renowned block, where bidders’ heads were turned by a diverse selection of vehicles that spanned 10 decades of the automobile – from a 1925 Rickenbacker Pickup to a 2016 Maserati Ghibli SQ4. Interest in pickups and SUVs in the collector world shows no signs of slowing, with several examples attracting attention from Thursday’s bidders, including an original 1988 Chevrolet K5 Blazer.

Among the record sales on Thursday was this 1969 Opel GT.

A number of vehicles set world auction record sales right from the get-go on Day One, including an Opel GT and Fiat 600D – both from 1969 – and a custom 1971 Pontiac Ventura.

Those attending the automotive lifestyle event today discovered there is a lot to see and do even beyond the auction area! Guests enjoyed getting up-close looks at all the auction cars on display, shopping for a wide variety of luxury goods and services in the Exhibitor Marketplace, checking out the many innovations from sponsors, and going on exciting rides with professional drivers around the Barrett-Jackson Performance Track in the latest vehicles from Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and Toyota. Barrett-Jackson’s new Product Showcase in the Exhibitor Marketplace was also in full swing, with Thursday’s special interviews including one with automotive TV personality Wayne Carini on behalf of Craftsman.

The auction action will continue to ramp up! Join us for an exciting Friday and Saturday – tickets are still available on Barrett-Jackson.com.
