Amid all the hype surrounding Ford’s revival of the Bronco to slot alongside the dominant F-150 Raptor and create an off-roading lineup that truly rivals Jeep’s Wrangler and Gladiator variants, gearheads seem a little overenthusiastic about this new product. Sure, the Wrangler has evolved in terms of design and technology over the years but at least it still looks utilitarian. The Bronco, on the other hand, mostly looks like a futuristic concept car drawn by an art student, with too many LED lights and electronified doodads to render it actually at home on the trail. And the truth is that while today’s hardcore desert-runners and rock-crawlers might have taken huge leaps and bounds in terms of tech, there’s still something great about the old classic off-roaders that they just can’t beat. Enter the world of off-roading restomod companies like Legacy Overland, which marries the old with the new to create masterpieces like this V8-swapped 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40.

This build comes through as an all-around, complete project that left no stone unturned in the quest to create a truck that looks old but drives new. Under the hood lurks a General Motors 5.7-liter crate V8 with a Weber carburetor and routing power to all four wheels through a brand new Edelbrock 700R4 four-speed automatic gearbox. Other mechanical upgrades include disc brakes all around, front manual lockers from Aisin, Old Man Emu leaf springs that add two inches of ground clearance,  gas shocks from Terrain Tamer, and a full setup of complementary Old Man Emu suspension components.

The exterior and interior have been painted Desert Storm Tan while the undercarriage has been painted in matching Raptor paint to aid with durability. The truck also features ambulance rear doors. Throw on 16-inch steelies shod in BF Goodrich Mud/Terrain tires, chrome hub caps, and galvanized hardware everywhere, plus the vegan leather interior and air conditioner—not to mention Bluetooth sound and a refurbished dash—and the whole package comes together perfectly.
